Hey Gluten Free Fam,

Have you tried the new Woolworths Gluten Free Chocolate Mud Cake? If not, don’t worry - it took us ages to get our hands on one here in regional NSW It’ll come eventually. Is it worth the hype? We’ll let you know!

Let’s get into it…

Woolworths Gluten Free Chocolate Mud Cake: Our Impressions

As soon as the news spread of Woolworths releasing a Gluten Free version of their Chocolate Mud Cake, I was pumped!

I rang and went in person many times to our local Woolies and I definitely really annoyed the staff until we got our hands on it.

See our official Instagram page via A Gluten Free Family for a complete rundown of our taste-testing experience.

After a lot of back-and-forth with local Woolies staff to make sure they had stock available, it was time to dig in.

The verdict? It’s a gluten free mud cake. ‘It does the job’ as Kati Keksi said in her review.

It must be said for those who are health-conscious about these types of purchases, even for a treat, it does include colours, preservatives and emulsifiers.

The mud cake is a bit of a contradiction in that it’s dense and rich in chocolate, but also provides an airy texture. Due to that, you can tell it’s very much a gluten free mud cake. The icing does help the cause as far as taste and texture is concerned.

I give it a 6/10, Blake gives it a 7/10.

Will I rave about it? No. I have many mixed feelings about the cake itself but it’s also brought up something much bigger for me.

Are We Expecting Enough From Gluten Free Products?

Hear me out: I’m grateful Woolworths has gone to the effort to make this gluten free mud cake. I really am. The thought and effort is there - to a degree. However, they are making this cake for us. Not for the other people who can and likely will eat gluten.

Sure, others who aren’t gluten free may eat it if it’s brought to a party of a coeliac or the family of a coeliac child. But the majority of the time - this cake is for us: the coeliac and gluten free community.

Now, I’m not expecting an amazing award-winning, Michelin star, fine dining experience from a Woolworths cake. It is $10 after all. I am expecting a bit more research and effort though. Not just with this cake but overall in the gluten free market when major supermarkets like Woolworths are creating gluten free versions of their gluten-containing foods.

Some major stockists are questioning whether there’s still a market for gluten free cookbooks. Let’s show them that there is!

Preorder Mel’s new cookbook and show Mel, these stockists and the whole of society that there’s a massive demand for gluten free recipes. The gluten free diet is not just a fad - it’s our only management for coeliac disease.

Final Thoughts on the Woolworths Gluten Free Mud Cake

I know there’s tonnes of negativity around the gluten free diet in the media right now. There’s still a massive lack of awareness around coeliac disease and it’s not often discussed amongst social media circles and the news more generally. I don’t want to bring things down, but I also want to raise the bar for us.

Our community deserves better. Better options. Better advocacy. Better overall awareness.

How do we get there? By making some noise and advocating. We’re living this life right beside you gluten free fam. We feel your frustrations. We’re ready to take action. It’s time for a change.
