A Gluten Free Guide to Dunedin, New Zealand by Andrea
Dunedin local Andrea gives us the inside tip on all the best gluten free locations close to home in New Zealand
GUEST BLOG: Andrea
Hello! I’m Andrea, a Dunedin local and I’ve been living gluten free since my Coeliac Disease diagnosis in 2021, and at the end of last year (2024) my son joined the gluten free journey also and seeing how much he’s thrived since has been incredible.
When I was first diagnosed, I felt overwhelmed and scared. I wasn’t sure if I’d ever be able to eat out again with friends or family. I worried that little old Dunedin might not have anywhere safe for someone like me to enjoy a meal.
But I was wrong - we actually have some amazing places here and in the surrounding areas. I’ve found that most local spots are more than happy to take the time to walk you through the menu and explain what’s safe, which makes all the difference.
I’ve put together a list of some of my top gluten free friendly spots (though definitely not all - it’s hard to fit everything in!). If you ever have questions or want more recommendations, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Taste Nature
Taste Nature has you covered for all things gluten free
The cafe at Taste Nature has to be the top of my suggestions, it’s entirely 100% gluten free! No need to double check the menu or ask for adjustments; everything here is safe and thoughtfully prepared for coeliacs and gluten free diners alike.
Good Good
This spot serves up mouthwatering burgers, fried chicken, fries and more, all available gluten free. Recently, they scrapped their GF surcharge, which honestly brought a tear to my eye. It’s rare and deeply appreciated when places show this level of understanding and support for the gluten free community.
The Duck Café
Walking into The Duck Café and reading the menu felt like a hug:
“Ask us what options we have to suit your dietary requirements. No shaming, all allergies and choices welcome. Our fryer is gluten free.” It’s rare to feel this seen and accommodated. The inclusive atmosphere is amazing, and yes, the food is fantastic too. And in such a stunning spot out at Macandrew Bay.
Café on Moray
Add Cafe on Moray to your Dunedin stops
One of mine and my son’s personal favourites! A great range of gluten free choices, including a fryer used only for gluten free food. Whether you’re in the mood for a cheese scone, pancakes, or a crispy fried chicken burger, you’ll find plenty for everyone to enjoy. The food is consistently delicious, and the staff are warm and welcoming.
Joe’s Garage
With locations across the country, Joe’s has proven to be a reliable go-to for gluten free dining. Our local Dunedin spot has never let us down, we’ve eaten there plenty of times for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The staff are knowledgeable, and the menu has solid gluten free options, making it a safe and easy choice when you’re out and about.
Patti’s & Cream
Patti’s & Cream offers a fantastic sweet treat destination
Whether you’re after a full meal or just a sweet treat, this spot is well worth a visit. They have a separate fryer for gluten free food, and their burgers come on buns from Pane Ora (so good!). We’re also big fans of their gluten free brownie and hot chocolate, perfect for a little indulgence.
Day Trip Idea: Oamaru (Approx. 1.5 hour drive north)
Planning a little getaway? Oamaru is not only full of charm, with highlights like the Steampunk Museum and the blue penguin colony (we saw hundreds of the cutest little penguins!), but it also has some excellent gluten free eats.
Scotts Brewery
We loved this place so much, we went back twice during our trip. The team is very coeliac aware, and the menu features a great range from pizzas to tacos, plus their very own gluten free beer. A total win.
Sweet Spot NZ – Wanaka
Whilst I find Wanaka a little harder to eat out at, there are some gems including Sweet Spot which has hot fresh delicious donuts that aren’t only gluten free, but also dairy, egg, yeast and nut free! They’re incredible and not to be missed.
Pane Ora ticks all the boxes for a delicious NZ gluten free bakery experience
Pane Ora
A dedicated gluten free bakery based right here in Dunedin. Not only are they fully gluten free, they’re also passionate about coeliac awareness. You can find their delicious breads and pastries on Saturday at the Otago Farmers Market by the railway station, or place an order directly through their website.
Whitestone Cheese Diner and Deli
Known for their incredible cheese, Whitestone also now has a diner. If you’re into eggs benedict, I can personally recommend theirs - it comes with their creamy Havarti and is absolutely worth trying. A great brunch spot before heading back to Dunedin.
Central Otago
If you’re heading a little further afield into Central Otago, Queenstown is home to some absolute gems for gluten free food, and the nearby historic town of Arrowtown has its own standout spots too.
Don’t miss out on Erik’s Fish and Chips in Queenstown
Here are a couple of my top picks:
Erik’s Fish and Chips
An unmissable stop! The entire menu is gluten free, making this a dream come true for coeliacs. It’s a full fish and chip shop filled with golden, crispy, gluten free goodness. We never visit Queenstown without stopping here. Bonus: they even do deep fried cheese rolls and deep fried kiwifruit. You can still enjoy that classic Kiwi takeaway experience safely and deliciously.
Postmasters
This charming spot sits in the heart of beautiful Arrowtown and offers a great selection of gluten free options. It’s a lovely spot to relax and soak in the heritage vibe while enjoying food that caters to dietary needs without compromise.
Exploring Dunedin and the wider Otago region is such a special experience. One minute you’re in the heart of the city, surrounded by heritage buildings, beaches, and wild coastal views, and with just a short drive, you’re in Central Otago, taking in the stunning mountains and lakes.
These are all places I’ve personally visited and felt safe eating at, and that peace of mind makes a huge difference when you’re gluten free. Whether you’re grabbing a bite in town, heading out on a weekend roadie, or planning a longer trip, it’s such a relief to know there are safe, delicious options all along the way.
I hope this guide helps you feel a bit more confident and inspired to get out there and enjoy it all, because you absolutely can.
Happy travels (and happy eating)!
