10 Celebrities Who Live a Gluten Free Life
10 famous celebrities who live a gluten free life
Hey Gluten Free Fam,
We have a bit of a departure from our regular content this time around, and thought we’d have a bit of fun in the world of celebrity culture.
For obvious reasons, many high profile figures keep their personal health and dietary habits to themselves. If they don’t feel compelled to make this information public, why does anyone need to know?
However, if you live with coeliac disease or a gluten intolerance, it’s very easy to feel isolated and alone on the journey. The truth? No amount of money or fame protects us from coeliac disease or a gluten intolerance.
Wealthy celebrities often have access to many advantages that others don’t, especially when it comes to issues around food costs and engagement with the best medical specialists in the field.
Yet they still experienced the same complications, pains and symptoms to reach a point where they had to change what they eat and how they approached dietary health.
This is an opportunity to see which celebrities live gluten free for health reasons, highlighting how many of the best actors, athletes, musicians and reality stars have made the adaptation to a gluten free life.
Let’s take a look.

1) Zooey Deschanel
After a blood test, the New Girl star discovered that dairy, eggs and wheat caused a reaction. “I am the worst person to ever eat with because I have all these stupid food allergies,” Deschanel told Vulture in 2011. “To be a gluten free vegan is, like, the most difficult thing you can possibly be.”
Fair to say that quote is hyperbole in the extreme, but in 2011, there was far less understanding and empathy for coeliac disease than there is today in 2025. The 45-year old has starred in movies like Elf, Yes Man and (500) Days of Summer.

2) Victoria Beckham
Posh Spice is no stranger to the gluten free diet. Her husband, global soccer star David Beckham, once said “Since I met her, she only eats grilled fish (and) steamed vegetables.”
Victoria Beckham has mentioned that tabloid scrutiny over her weight and complications with her metabolism encouraged her to remove gluten from her diet, explaining that her body struggles to break down gluten.
3) Justin Bieber

There have been few bigger male pop stars over the past 20 years than Justin Bieber. With over 150 million albums sold worldwide, the baby-faced Canadian has seemingly been blessed with every advantage.
However, one social media post in 2019 would tell a different story. "Worst news ever, I'm officially allergic to gluten," Bieber revealed on his Instagram Story, "No more Coronas unless they make gluten free beer like this! Sad day."
Justin Bieber has close to 600 million social media followers across all platforms, and his advocacy and awareness makes an impact.
4) Katy Perry

Few artists release a track dedicated to the gluten pizza they can no longer enjoy. That’s exactly what Katy Perry did with the song The One That Got Away. Another pop star with hundreds of millions of followers, Perry has been a gluten free advocate since 2014.
During her Prismatic Tour, Katy Perry told the press “You get to a certain age, and then one day your doctor of Chinese medicine tells you you’re allergic to gluten.”
5) Novak Djokovic

When it comes to personal health advice and Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam winner has not always enjoyed the best of reputations. However, the Serbian champion has been public when it comes to his intolerance of gluten, with the protein negatively impacting his energy and performance levels.
By removing pasta, cheese and gluten-containing bread from his diet, Djokovic switched focus to meals rich in energy-boosting bowls that include muesli, berries and strawberries. His meal time preparation is packed with healthy oils, lentils, chickpeas, meat, fish, nuts and seeds.
6) Miley Cyrus

Three-time Grammy Award Winner Miley Cyrus is another member of the gluten free community. The pop star has undergone a number of transformations over the years, whether it applies to her music or her health.
When she was known as star of the 2000s sitcom Hannah Montana, Cyrus revealed to the world via Twitter: “For everyone calling me anorexic I have a gluten and lactose allergy. It's not about weight it's about health. Gluten is crapppp anyway!”
This CBS article from 2012 offers an interesting snapshot in time, as it covers the Miley Cyrus news with an interview from gastroenterologist Dr. Roshini Rajapaksa.
He confirmed to readers what Cyrus was stating. The gluten free diet is not intended to be purely a weight management tool. It is the only known remedy for combating coeliac disease.
7) Jennifer Esposito
Many celebrities have been very private and guarded about their gluten free journey, but Jennifer Esposito has been a proud public advocate for years. As a regular cast member on 90s sitcom Spin City alongside Michael J. Fox, Esposito would go on to feature in dozens of features and shows including Blue Bloods and NCIS.
Yet her struggles with coeliac disease continued to be debilitating. She recalled her pain to People in 2024 “I thought having panic disorder and having panic attacks all the time was normal,” Esposito said.
“I thought my stomach being sick all the time was normal. I thought that sleeping all through lunch was normal. I thought highs and lows and rage, I thought it was normal.”
Jennifer hasn’t stopped there. She is the author of Jennifer’s Way: My Journey with Celiac Disease--What Doctors Don't Tell You and How You Can Learn to Live Again, helping others in this space manage their journey.
8) Drew Brees

One of the most famous retired athletes who lives with a gluten intolerance is Drew Brees. The former Superbowl champion and NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) with the New Orleans Saints achieved the greatest of heights in his American football career.
In a sport that demands nothing short of physical excellence, he had to adapt within the gridiron environment while being allergic to gluten, wheat, dairy, eggs and nuts.
"If I stayed away from everything I'm allergic to, I'd lose 20 pounds," Brees told the press. "Some are minor allergies, some major. I listen to my body and do the best I can."
9) Jessica Simpson

Fans of the early to mid-2000s female pop scene will be more than familiar with Jessica Simpson. The 44-year old Texas native was a regular on the charts during this time, also becoming a reality star in her own right alongside former husband and 98 Degrees singer Nick Lachey on MTV’s Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica.
Yet Jessica Simpson would eventually transition to a gluten free diet after years of dietary issues. Gluten/wheat exposure would cause a great amount of inflammation in her stomach, causing ulcers in the process. By recognising that she is unable to digest wheat like most others, Simpson’s health improved.
10) Kourtney Kardashian

Rounding out our top 10 celebrities who live a gluten free life is Kourtney Kardashian. As a member of one of the most high profile families in the celebrity world, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star admitted in 2016 that a diet removed from dairy and gluten was imperative.
“I kept battling with myself back and forth — like, why am I doing this diet? I have always felt fine before when eating dairy and gluten, but I do believe that we have one life to live and I would like to live it feeling my best,” Kardashian said.
“I have noticed a great positive change in behaviour with my children when we stick to a gluten free and dairy-free diet.”
Celebrities and the Gluten Free Cause
We’ve only touched on 10 celebrities here, but there are many others who have gone public. From Billy Bob Thornton to Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Susie Essman, Ryan Phillippe, Adele, Rachel Weisz, Jameela Jamil and Ginger Spice herself Geri Halliwell, the list continues to grow.
Phil Hates Gluten brought attention to LA Lakers and NBA superstar Luka Doncic who now embraces the gluten free diet for his health and athletic preparation.
Matt Damon also revealed that he stuck to a gluten free diet to prepare for the upcoming Christopher Nolan epic The Odyssey, but that was purely to help the actor lose weight for the role rather than to adhere to medical advice.
Chances are if you run a Google search for celebrities and “gluten free,” you will encounter a tonne of misinformation and conjecture about what motivates their choice.
For many years and in many circles, it has been viewed as nothing more than a trend famous people have latched onto to manage their weight or promote a line of products. That perception helps no one's cause, especially the coeliac community.
However, when it comes to champions like Jennifer Esposito and Australian athletes like Brooke Stratton and Ben Brown, the reach and platform that celebrities enjoy cannot be overstated.
The fact remains we live in a society that elevates celebrity, for better or worse (in most cases worse), but their advocacy for greater awareness and public support carries a great deal of weight.
In the meantime, let’s all do our part.
